Speed guns loaned to safety teams
Speeding warning
Speeding motorists could be sent a warning letter from the police
Portable speed cameras are being offered on loan to road safety campaign groups in Somerset.

Police are making six of the cameras available to Community Speedwatch groups in Yeovil.

The groups record details of speeding motorists and pass the details to the police. Normally they would have to buy speed guns, which cost 2,500 each.

A police spokesman said he hoped this would lead to more schemes being set up and also be a warning to motorists.

Police say schemes can only operate in areas with a speed limit of less than 40 mph and where a risk assessment indicates the location is safe and suitable.

Drivers spotted speeding by the groups are sent a warning letter by the police.

The Community Speedwatch project was set up in Ash, Somerset.
