Recycling yields were up an average of 3.4kg per household per week
A system of collecting and recycling food, refuse and garden waste in Somerset has won the national Best Local Authority Initiative award.

'Sort It!' involves weekly recycling and food waste collection, fortnightly refuse pick-ups and optional charged garden waste collection.

The judging panel said: "This is a high impact and great initiative that is readily replicable."

Overall, recycling rates have more than trebled in Sort It! collection areas.

The judges praised the fact that in dealing with food waste, Somerset had taken on what others were starting to address.

The collections in Somerset have increased recycling yields to an average of 3.4kg per household per week, achieved food waste yields of 1.9kg per household per week and reduced refuse for disposal by half.

Mendip District Council's Nigel Woollcombe-Adams said: "What a fantastic achievement for all those people who have worked so hard."

Somerset Waste Partnership covers Mendip District Council, South Somerset and Taunton Deane.
