Factory closure means 260 jobs go

The Dairy Crest plant is due to close in June 2005
Dairy Crest has announced it is to close its factory in Yeovil in Somerset with the loss of 260 jobs.

The Yoplait Dairy Crest factory is involved with making own-brand products for supermarkets, which the company says is less profitable.

The site is due to close by June 2005, and Dairy Crest is expected to focus on branded products such as Petits Filous.

When the company closed a similar operation in London last year it blamed intense price competition.

Dairy Crest said it would continue to supply products such as milk and cheese to supermarkets.

The closure of the joint-venture factory would cost Dairy Crest 1.5m, and would have a "small benefit" on profits in the year to March 2006.
