Council warns of budget shortages

Councillor Crossley warns that council taxes could go up
People in Bath are being warned that services could be cut or council taxes may go up because of underfunding.

The leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council, Paul Crossley, is writing to local MPs, urging them to lobby the government for more money.

Councillor Crossley said: "The council provides a great range of services including schools and care services.

"Managing a budget to deliver all of these services without increasing council tax is a very big challenge."

In his letter to Bath MP, Don Foster and Wansdyke MP, Dan Norris, he lists seven areas where he claims the council needs more funding to respond to national pressures.

These include social services, pensions, the local plan, pay agreements, customer access, waste disposal and education.

"It is important that central government fully understands the pressures that local government is under rather than looking to use it as a scapegoat, said councillor Crossley.
