Binge-drinking is blamed for a rise in alcohol-related violence |
A nightclub at a seaside resort is being accused of irresponsibility for selling alcoholic drinks for a penny. The Stars Club in Weston-super-Mare is currently offering beers and spirits for 1p on Friday and Saturday nights.
Police fear revellers will be tempted to binge-drink, possibly leading to an increase in violence in the town.
Officers will monitor the club during the promotion and will "take action" if trouble breaks out. The manager of The Stars has refused to comment.
Guests must pay up to 9 entry fee to benefit from the reduced price drinks.
But a spokesman for the Portman Group, which campaigns for responsible drinking said: "We don't think it's a very responsible thing do to.
"I think pubs and bars can offer value for money without having to do this kind of thing which seems to be an incitement to people to drink too much."

Inspector Patrick McGowan of Avon and Somerset Police said: "There is nothing illegal about what the club is doing but they have got to be responsible."
He said weekend binge-drinking had been largely to blame for the increase in alcohol-related violence in Weston in the past few years.
"This violent crime has a vast impact on our policing on the community and the NHS."
