Crematorium holds open day tours
Residents of Weston-super-Mare took the chance to look behind the scenes at the town's crematorium on Saturday.

The open day with tours and exhibition stands was at the Ebdon Road crematorium and cemetery and was organised by North Somerset Council.

The idea was for people to find out about operational aspects while relaxed and not attending a funeral.

The 10-acre site opened in 1966 and since then there have been nearly 52,000 cremations and 3,500 burials.

Russell Gadsby, the crematorium and cemetery manager, said: "Most visits to a crematorium or cemetery are usually sad occasions.

"The open day provided the public with an opportunity to absorb the full aspects of our work on a less stressful day. "

The event followed the success of a previous open day in 2001 when more than 500 people attended.
