Blood donor gives his 100th pint
A plumber from Weston-super-Mare has won a rare award for his 100th donation of blood.

Ted Hewlett has been donating blood for 40 years and he has potentially helped to save more than 300 lives.

He is to receive a Donor Award from the National Blood Service which says that fewer than 1% of donors make it to a "century".

Mr Hewlett became a donor after a friend's relation was killed in a car crash and "carried on from there."

"In 41 years I've given 101 pints of blood - next week it'll be 102 pints of blood," he said.

"If you see a very bad road accident, you see a lot of blood on the road.

"It straight away flashes through my mind that maybe my blood could have helped that person. If it wasn't for us donating blood then a lot of people would die."

Donors who achieve 100 donations receive a special purple donor card, a certificate and an Edinburgh Crystal decanter.
