It is hoped wave and tidal power will provide energy in the future |
A study into how to tap the power of the sea while protecting the coastline has begun in Somerset. Bridgwater Bay has high wave and tidal current speeds which cause floods and erosion, but have considerable power behind them.
Researchers want to build some kind of structure in the bay to capture this energy, while protecting the coastline.
The 40,000 study is being part funded by the South West Regional Development Agency (RDA) and the local county council.
Wave power
The study will look at proposals to place a number of structures called total energy extractors around the bay.
It is hoped these structures will be able to harness tidal, wave and wind energy whilst providing protection for the coastline.
Dominic Vincent, South West RDA environment manager said: "Funding this study is a positive step towards conserving the region's environment.
"The RDA has identified wave and tidal power as two key technologies with the potential to become principle energy sources for the future."
