Boxing champion to become freeman

Carl Froch
Froch has won all 24 of his pro fights

Boxer and WBC super-middleweight champion Carl Froch is tipped to be made a freeman of his hometown.

Gedling Borough Council will decide if the 31-year-old is to become an Honorary Freeman on Wednesday.

Froch, known as the Cobra, took the WBC title in December by beating Canada's Jean Pascal in Nottingham.

Council leader Roland Spencer said: "It's a very special thing for a very special person - he's a nice guy and a role model for young people."

Froch, a former British and Commonwealth champion, is unbeaten in 24 pro fights with 19 knockouts.

Mr Spencer added: "The borough council gave him some grants in 1999 and 2000 and he had use of our facilities, so we're very pleased he's gone on to make it.

"In these unpleasant times it's nice to have a lovely story like this. It's a wonderful thing for our area and it makes us all feel very proud."
