Council aims to control overspend

Nottingham City Council has vowed to tackle a projected 6.6m overspend in its annual council budget.

The major increase in budget spending is in children's services, but the council said there would be no cuts to services for vulnerable young people.

Deputy council leader Graham Chapman said action was being taken to control costs and balance the budget.

Some additional revenue would come from a dividend due from its city-owned transport firm, he added.

"There has been a lot more expenditure on child protection and disabled children," he said.

The overspend on children's services is projected at 5.2m for the 2008-2009 budget year.

Mr Chapman said the council relies on car parking charges for income, but the number of cars coming into the city is declining.

He said the city was still aiming to balance the budget for the year end, adding that no redundancies were planned.
