New student housing code for city

Hundreds of landlords in Nottingham have signed up to a new code for student accommodation.

The new scheme aims to help provide tenants with safeguards over the standard of their accommodation and a complaint process.

More than 360 landlords, with space for about 15,000 people, have registered.

Faye Powell from the charity Unipol Student Homes said local residents could also contact them about anti-social behaviour at student properties.

'Fit and proper'

"We really wanted to include the local residents as they are much a stakeholders as the students and landlords," Ms Powell said.

The charity works along with DASH (Decent and Safe Housing) and meets the landlords to make sure they are "fit and proper".

Landlord Igor Humprey, who owns student housing in Dunkirk, said the scheme was "a sensible way to maintain a good standard of housing".

"I have had people ring me up from Malaysia and India who have seen my property on the Unipol website," he said.

The code covers a variety of areas including fire safety, security, maintenance of outside areas and the management of complaints.

Nottingham has a total student population of about 40,000.
