Football knickers up for auction
The knickers
The Reds' knickers have never been worn
A pair of ladies' knickers associated with Nottingham Forest's 1959 FA Cup triumph have been auctioned.

They were one of 12 red pairs with a white trim given to the Reds before their win over Luton Town and were sold to a private collector for 250.

The underwear was made by Nottingham hosier Frank Chambers and worn by the players' wives and girlfriends at the post-match celebrations.

The pair which were auctioned have never been worn.

The briefs were included in sporting memorabilia auctioned by Vennett-Smith Auctioneers at Nottingham Race Course.

'Won the cup'

Mr Chambers went into the players' dressing room and handed out the underwear before the match.

Auctioneer Tim Davidson said: "It broke all the tension in the dressing room, and he'd never seen the players play so relaxed - in a way they are the knickers that won the cup.

"Afterwards, as was tradition in the day, there was a big celebration dinner at the Savoy in London and the players' wives wore their knickers - apart from this pair, which the chap made and kept for himself, as a keepsake as opposed to wearing them."

Other items for sale included a Forest reserve shirt from the 1959 final and a Joe Baker number nine shirt from the 1960s.
