Plan for thousands of new homes

Planners suggest more homes in the city centre - not on greenbelt
About 1,000 new homes a year could be built in Nottingham over the next 20 years under the latest plans from the city and county councils.

The plans are part of a government drive to create affordable housing.

Most of the new homes in the county would be built in and around Nottingham city - with planners keen to avoid any development on greenbelt areas.

Consultants originally suggested around 1,200 new properties a year, but that figure has now been lowered.

The joint plan prepared for both authorities calls for more inner-city housing but adds that the actual construction of the homes will depend on "continued buoyancy of the city centre market".

The total for the greater Nottingham area, including Erewash in Derbyshire, is more than 50,000 new homes in the period between 2006-2026.

The plans will be discussed further by councillors before being reviewed by a regional panel.
