Praise for bars in test purchases
Police in Nottingham have praised pubs and clubs in the city for turning away underage drinkers in test purchases.

Almost 30 premises were tested by undercover police officers accompanying teenagers trying to buy alcohol.

They found 23 of the 27 passed the tests by either refusing entry to customers thought to be underage or by asking them for identification.

Insp Paul Winter also warned teenagers they risked getting a criminal record if caught using fake ID.

Fakes increasing

"I am delighted at the results," said Insp Winter. "The vast majority passed this time and I think it shows we are now making good progress.

"If we are to make Nottingham a safer place for people to visit then we need licensees to play their part."

He added the number of teenagers caught using fake ID was increasing and that most were altering their date of birth on provisional driving licenses to make them seem over 18.

Individual bar staff face 80 fines if they are caught serving anyone underage and premises caught offending on a regular basis could be closed for 24 hours or have licenses revoked.
