Youth in court on firearms charge
A youth charged with a firearms offence after an incident in which Nottinghamshire Police officers fired baton rounds has appeared in court.

The 16-year-old appeared before Mansfield magistrates charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

Officers fired shots from a baton gun during an incident at Stanton Hill near Skegby on Friday night.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is looking into the matter.

Independent investigation

The youth was struck but not seriously injured and taken to Kings Mill Hospital where he was later released.

He is due to appear before a youth court on Tuesday.

A spokesperson from Nottinghamshire Police said an independent investigation by the force's professional standards department would also begin.

Nottinghamshire Police described baton rounds as a "less lethal" type of bullet made from rubber, used to disarm suspects.

This is only the second time shots have been fired at a suspect by Nottinghamshire Police. The first was after a siege at a flat in Cotgrave in 2004.
