Children and teenagers in Nottingham are being warned not to misuse fireworks in the run-up to Halloween and Bonfire Night. A joint police and city council team is stepping-up patrols in the worst- affected areas to identify offenders.
Police are issuing Penalty Notices for Disorders, PNDs, for anyone caught messing around with fireworks.
Meanwhile the fire service has put together an education programme aimed at children aged six and upwards.
If they are caught misusing fireworks, people aged over 16 can be fined �80 and youngsters aged between 10 and 15 can be fined �40.
But the responsibility for paying the fine will fall to parents or guardians.
Nottinghamshire Polices Crime Reduction Manager Insp Dean Brown said the fixed penalty fines are just one way of preventing firework abuse.
"PNDs are one solution and you can see that we have issued penalty notices for disorders," he said.
"We are actually using that solution but there are lots of other ways that we work with lots of other agencies such as the fire service and education to try and get across the message about the nuisance that's caused by fireworks...
"You can use fireworks, you can use them safely and still enjoy them without causing annoyance to other people."
