Carlos Alberto is one of three Brazilian stars to launch the project |
Three 1970 World Cup superstars from Brazil are descending on an English town to help launch an international football and dance exchange. Jairzinho, Felix and Carlos Alberto Torres arrive in Worksop on Friday along with the sports ministers from the UK and Brazil.
The project aims to use community football to tackle social exclusion, youth problems and low aspirations.
It will link pupils in Notts with counterparts in Sao Paulo and Rio.
Jairzinho is the only player to have scored in every round of a World Cup Finals, a feat he achieved in 1970.
Felix was the goalkeeper in Brazil's 1970 World Cup winning team which was captained by Carlos Alberto, who scored what is said to be one of the best-ever World Cup goals.
Bassetlaw MP John Mann said: "I am thrilled to be welcoming Jairzinho, Felix and Carlos Alberto to my constituency just days before the World Cup.
"To have such genuine footballing heroes here to endorse this unique project is a real honour and underlines how this initiative will inspire this and future generations of young people in Bassetlaw and in Brazil."
Head teacher Brian Rossiter from Valley School in Worksop, one of the schools involved in the exchange, said the project will change the lives of the pupils.
"They will mix in with some of the big Brazilian football names - and see behind the scenes with some of the top footballers over there."
The exchange will cost at least 100,000 with the money raised from auctions, donations and sponsorships from local business, he said.
Brazilian Minister for Sport Orlando Silva will meet with the Sports Minister Richard Caborn during the Brazilian visit.
