Last hope for struggling colliery
Harworth colliery
UK Coal says the site suffers geological problems
A deal with a major energy supplier is the last hope for a Nottinghamshire colliery just days from being mothballed, managers have said.

UK Coal has been negotiating with EDF energy in the hope of a deal to keep Harworth operating.

The pit is due to halt production in September which would mean up to 300 miners being laid off.

It is hoped most workers will be able to transfer to Welbeck and Thoresby, the last remaining mines in Notts.

Harworth has the deepest mine workings in the UK, going over 1,000 metres below the surface.

Work has been continuing on one seam but once that is finished the mine would need substantial investment to continue - and that would need a guaranteed market.
