Crime down, but rise in violence
Crime has fallen in Nottingham compared to a year ago but violent offences are up, new police figures have revealed.

There were 1,013 reported incidents in December, a fall of 125 but violent crime increased by 46 to 650.

However the police claimed this was expected because more officers were out on patrol recording minor assaults.

Nottingham was one of five cities given 40,000 as part in a Home Office campaign to target alcohol abuse on the run up to Christmas.

More patrols

The money was used to put more officers on the streets and to test pubs and off-licences were not selling to underage drinkers.

The campaign was timed to coincide with the introduction of new licensing laws on 24 November, which allow pubs and clubs to apply for longer opening hours.

Inspector Paul Winter, city centre commander, said: "Our tactics throughout December were to put more officers out on patrol, especially at night, and they were encouraged to deal decisively with any public disorder."
