The number of tenants being evicted from council homes because of rent arrears in Nottingham has more than doubled in the past three years. About 540 people were evicted for deficits in the 12 months up to April. Nearly 2,000 court summons have been issued to residents since 2002.
The city council is encouraging people to pay by direct debit.
Homeless charity Framework said at-risk tenants needed more advice and support.
The statistics, in a report for the council's housing panel, showed nearly 230 people were evicted for arrears in 2002.
