Changes to rail timetables and routes in the East Midlands are "unacceptable" according to a transport lobby group. Transport 2000 said plans by Central Trains to make fewer stops at smaller stations like Beeston and Netherfield would force commuters to use cars.
The changes to Central Trains services come into effect across the region from 11 December.
Company spokesperson Ged Burgess said the changes will improve punctuality on its network by simplifying routes.
'Victorian network'
"We need to invest in a high quality public transport system that gets people out of their cars," Transport 2000 spokesman David Thornhill said.
"We have too many trains on our Victorian network and we need to invest in more capacity on the railway - it is a long-term vision for a network that serves the 21st Century."
Mr Burgess said: "We are improving services between Nottingham and Skegness - so from December we will run a shuttle service that will have more stops at Grantham."
He said the overall number of trains was not being reduced but there would be fewer stops at some smaller stations in the morning rush hours.
But he said passengers would benefit from better punctuality.
Transport 2000 is calling on Central Trains to ensure local stations have a full service during the morning and evening rush hours so commuters can make connections to intercity trains.
It cited the example of Netherfield station - just three miles from Nottingham - which will have a train service at 0651 then not again until 0830.
The lobby group also said there are currently five trains from Derby arriving in Nottingham between 0750 and 0910, but from a week on Monday there will be just three.
