Coal mine may shed around 80 jobs
Welbeck colliery
It is hoped most of the jobs will be lost through voluntary redundancy
Eighty jobs could be lost at a Nottinghamshire pit as part of a restructuring plan, colliery managers have confirmed.

The move, at Welbeck Colliery, near Ollerton, comes nine months after the site was given a reprieve when miners agreed to new working practices.

UK Coal said it was necessary to revert to a different shift pattern to keep the colliery viable.

Some miners will be offered the chance to transfer to nearby Thoresby Pit.

The move will involve getting rid of one of the teams of men at the mine leaving around 440 miners still working there.

It is thought many of the job losses will be through voluntary redundancy.

Managers said there has been full consultation with the workers and union officials.

The colliery, which has been producing coal for almost 90 years, lost 20m in 2004 after its planned output dropped to 800,000 tonnes.
