First woman wins jockeys' title
Hayley Turner
Hayley Turner's family say she is dedicated to her riding
A Nottinghamshire woman has made horse racing history by becoming Britain's first female champion apprentice jockey.

Hayley Turner, 22, of Southwell, shares her win with Saleem Golam, also 22, who is the first Asian to win the title.

She was apprenticed to Newmarket trainer Michael Bell, but is now a professional jockey having ridden a total of more than 95 winners.

Hayley Turner's last win was on Garden Society at Lingfield on 30 October.

She is now taking a holiday in Phuket, in Thailand.

She rides extremely well and she certainly has a future in the sport - hopefully at the top level

Her father Richard, who lives in Woollaton, said: "I'm obviously very proud of her as all the family are, everyone's proud of her.

"We're not surprised that she's won it because of the effort and dedication she's put into her riding and we want to thank the people who've helped her along the way."

He added: "It's still a very male-dominated sport but I think she's made inroads."

Bell said: "It's a fantastic achievement for a sport which is dominated by men. And she thoroughly deserves it.

"She rides extremely well and she certainly has a future in the sport - hopefully at the top level."
