A scheme to prevent drug-dealing and gun crime is being organised in Nottingham with the help of a major corporate donor. Community groups across the city will be asked to join the mentoring project.
Police are hoping to get hundreds of thousands of pounds for the project from one of the city's major employers.
Officers say tackling gun crime is already a priority in Nottingham - and for the first time in years, the number of shootings has declined.
The project will try to stop young people from getting involved with guns.
Supt Nick Holmes of Nottinghamshire police said: ""They are people who will be either the future prosperity of Nottingham or the future contributors to gun crime and drugs.
"We want to harness that good will and all that potential and make a difference."
A number of so-called "diversion" projects, including the Youth Inclusion Project, have already been set up in inner city Nottingham to stop youth crime.
