Unions insist there is a future for the facility |
The future of 450 mining jobs hangs in the balance after a meeting to decide the fate of a Nottinghamshire colliery. It has been widely predicted that UK Coal will close Welbeck Colliery because of geological problems at the site near Ollerton and falling profits.
An announcement over the pit's future is expected next week. Union leaders and company bosses met on Friday.
Neil Greatrex, from the Union of Democratic Mineworkers, said coal could still viably be mined there.
UK Coal had announced in 2003 it planned to spend 18m on the colliery to access new reserves.
But the discovery of a geological fault meant the company launched a review.
Mr Greatrex said: "There's coal underground at Welbeck that can be mined viably.
"It's up to us along with the management to come up with a scheme that's going to be viable."
