Homes to be built on rugby ground
Nearly 150 homes are to be built on the site of Nottingham Rugby Club's ground.

Plans of the proposed properties at the Ireland Avenue ground in Beeston were approved by members of Broxtowe Borough Council on Monday night.

The club will wipe out debts of more than 500,000 through the sale and plans to move to a ground on Nottingham University's Highfields site.

The ground was given to Nottingham RFC in 1904 but is on the River Trent's flood plain and prone to water-logging.

Despite drainage being installed in the 1980s, issues surrounding the problem had delayed the application.

Redevelopment plans by David Wilson homes were submitted to Broxtowe Borough Council several years ago.

Andy Starr, from the club, said: "It means the club is now in a position to clear fairly heavy debts.

"Basically the situation now is that the club is in a position to go to its members to approve any possible move.

"Obviously the plans are that it will want to move to Highfields and that has been put to the members in outline."

The club is expected hold an extraordinary general meeting by the end of February.
