Three city schools face closure
Three primary schools in an area of Nottingham could close under city council proposals.

Education bosses want to shut Douglas, Lenton and Unity primary and nursery schools in Lenton and Radford.

They say all seven schools in the area have many spare places. They propose to enlarge and modernise the four remaining schools.

A four-week consultation period will begin to get views from heads, teachers and governors.

Staff redeployed

The proposals would see the three schools close in 2008.

Robin Aldridge, acting corporate director of education, said: "In Lenton and Radford the facts speak for themselves.

"Here we have seven good schools, but, regrettably, all of them have surplus capacity and it's increasingly hard to attract good staff to schools that are half empty."

He added the council would look to redeploy staff from the three schools in the enlarged primaries or elsewhere in the city.
