Prince Harry will be invited to the Holocaust Centre

The Beth Shalom Centre in Laxton, Notts, says it would give the prince the chance to meet Holocaust survivors.

Officials from the centre acted after pictures were published of Prince Harry sporting a Nazi uniform at a fancy dress party.

James Smith, from the centre, says he has already contacted Clarence House.

Dr Smith said: "We are keen that he understands why this was a great lapse in judgement.

"But we don't want him to be dragged out in front of the cameras and make a forced apology."

Prince Harry has already issued a written apology after a picture of him in the costume was printed in a newspaper.

Dr Smith said: "There have been mixed reactions from Holocaust survivors with some shocked, upset and offended... about the prince wearing a swastika.

"But the majority of them were quite understanding that this was a young lad that made a great error judgement.

"It shows that despite going to the best schools in the country and learning about history - the important thing is understanding history."

He said the centre has agreed to send an invitation to Clarence House after Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January.

"We have 500 young people at the centre every week and they get a chance to meet with survivors," he said.
