City prison tops suicide league
Nottingham Prison has the highest number of suicides at any jail in England and Wales, according to a government report.

Five people serving time at the jail on Perry Road took their lives in 2003, along with two at Leicester, one in Lincoln and one at Ranby, Notts.

Prison officials say it is unclear why prisoners at Nottingham appear more vulnerable than elsewhere.

Over the past four years, 15 inmates have killed themselves at Nottingham.

The prison holds high numbers of people on remand, who statistically are at the highest risk of committing suicide, the Howard League for Penal Reform has said.
