Main road to be closed at weekend

One of Nottinghamshire's busiest roads is being closed for resurfacing for the next five weekends.

But the work may have to be done again in five years time.

The Highways Agency is carrying out the work, which also includes new safety rails and pedestrian paving on the A453 between Clifton and the M1.

Because of plans to widen the road, the agency has said it does not want to waste money on a surface which would last for many years.

Bank Holiday

Adrian Slack, from the Highways Agency, said: "We aim for a 20 year life (for repairs) but we have a widening of the A453 planned.

"We don't want to waste our money, so we are trying to get a balance between getting a decent surface for a few years before widening comes along."

The work begins on Friday at 2000 BST and will continue until 0600 BST on 2 August.

Closures will continue at the same time for the next three weekends, then will break for the August bank holiday weekend, with work resuming on the weekend of 3 September to Monday 6 September.

Diversions will be signposted via M1 Junction 24 and the A52.

People travelling to Nottingham East Midlands Airport are advised to leave extra time for their journey.
