High rates of sick leave tackled
Civic leaders in Mansfield say steps are being taken to tackle a high level of sickness absence among staff.

The average sick leave is 13.8 days a year for each employee but officials say this figure is distorted by the amount of long-term sick leave.

But when those figures are excluded, it shows that on average every district council member of staff had nearly a week off sick in a year.

Now the council is working with trade union officials to tackle the problem.

The council's Chief Executive, Richard Goad, has sent a memo to all staff highlighting an unacceptably high level of sickness absence.

Employees will be encouraged to discuss any issues they have with managers and the occupational nurse or anonymously through a survey.
