Town rubbishes recycling report
Figures which show Mansfield near the bottom of a table for recycling have been rejected by council officials.

To mark the start of an exhibition at the town's civic centre, the district council is highlighting the work done by its recycling team.

Government figures suggested just 4% of waste in Mansfield is recycled.

But officials say those statistics are out of date and do not reflect the true picture or do justice to the hard work being done by the community.

The council was put near the bottom of the official Defra recycling table, having increased its performance from just 1% in 1998/9.

But the town's bin inspector, Alan Wilson, who checks the content of wheelie bins, insists recycling rates are growing.

He said the council now runs a twin bin system and thinks its true performance is somewhere around 12% - 14%.
