Living on a lorry 'rat-run'

By Brady Haran
BBC iCan reporter

Lorries are a problem during the day and night

It is early morning and Keith Middleton is taking photos from a small window overlooking Mile End Road.

The Nottingham businessman has a vast collection of photos taken from this window, all of them depicting lorries.

But Mr Middleton is not a lorry enthusiast - he is quite the opposite.

He is among the numerous residents of Mile End Road who are sick of lorries using the road as a "rat-run".

Hundreds of lorries use the small road every day to access the Colwick Industrial Estate.

He says: "The noise is constant during the day, but the worst thing is that they run all night now.

"We've got them at three and four o'clock in the morning - you just can't sleep any more."

Mr Middleton says lorries should be accessing the industrial estate by using a nearby road called Private Road Number 1, which has few pedestrians and no houses.

However drivers prefer using Mile End Road for a simple reason - it is quicker.

Mile End Road's traffic lights have a green arrow and filter lane, making it easy to turn across traffic on the busy Colwick Loop Road.

Turning into Private Road is more difficult because there is no filter lane.

'Accident sites'

Mr Middleton says: "Despite the fact the (Private) road is wider and there is no real pedestrian traffic or risk, the council refuse to put a filter on that turn."

He adds that placing a weight restriction on Mile End Road would also keep out the lorries.

However Nottinghamshire County Council says putting a green arrow at the Private Road junction would also require roadworks costing up to 160,000.

Highway manager Eamon Harrison says: "It is low on our funding priorities... we are concentrating more on accident sites."

He also points out that Mile End Road has been used to access the Colwick Industrial Estate "for many years".

Mr Middleton does not disagree with this - he had a file with letters between residents and the council that dates back to 1972.

He says: "We've had many, many promises and probably most of the people at the council have retired since then."

Mr Middleton is new to the campaign, having moved in last year.

But he has already formed an action committee and has used his contacts to have the matter put before the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott.

But unless Mr Prescott intervenes, it looks like Mr Middleton will spend many more days and nights taking photos of the passing lorries.
