A portrait of football legend Brian Clough has raised more than double its asking price in a charity auction.

Artist Neil Heath completed the painting just weeks before the trophy winning Derby County and Nottingham Forest manager died of stomach cancer.

Neil, 26, who lost his mother to cancer, decided to sell the painting for charity with a guide price of 500.

Local businessman Patrick Chambers said he was only too happy to pay 1,000 for such a unique piece of memorabilia.

"I was 17 when they won Division 1 and 18 when they won the first European Cup," he said.

"There is never going to be another generation that saw and experienced what I did.

Brian Clough retires
Brian Clough had success in Derby and Nottingham
"I travel a lot around Europe and Nottingham is associated with two things - Robin Hood and Brian Clough. He made a huge impact."

Mr Chambers, whose father died of cancer, is an avid collector of sporting memorabilia.

"My wife pointed out that this portrait was for sale and when I saw the money was going to a cancer charity, I got on the phone."

Mr Heath said: "I wanted to do a portrait of Brian Clough which was a little different.

"I always intended to sell it for charity and the very sad events of last week really made my mind up for me."

He added: "I had lots of interest but nothing came close to Mr Chambers offer - I was amazed and very grateful."
