Council tenants get funding boost
Council houses
There are concerns about the use of private finance
Plan for a multi-million pound investment in council homes in Nottingham, have been unveiled.

The money, a share of 3bn, will be used to upgrade 170,000 homes in areas such as Nottingham, Bassetlaw, Newark and Sherwood.

The homes will be owned and run using a mixture of public and private finance.

Announcing the funding, Housing Minister Phil Hope, said tenants should welcome the investment.

Tenants' vote

He said: "This is a real opportunity for those people in Nottingham - 44% of whom live in homes which are of a poorer standard than they should be - to improve their quality of living.

"I really hope people grasp this opportunity with both hands - this is a huge amount of investment."

Tenants will be asked to vote for the plans.

The MP for Nottingham South, Alan Simpson, says not everyone is in favour of the development.

He said: "What the tenants are saying to the government is, 'Look, you've identified a pot of money.

"'We want the option to remain as council tenants, and use that money that you've allocated to have the improvements done through the local authority.

"'We don't want you bringing in a new tier of higher paid management to run this as separate projects for themselves but not for us.'"
