Southwell Minster is the centre of the diocese |
The Anglican Church in Nottinghamshire is considering changing the name of its diocese and moving the bishop's home and office from Southwell. Originally part of the Lincoln Diocese, Southwell was chosen as the centre for a new diocese as a compromise between the two cities of Derby and Nottingham.
A working party will look at changing the name to include Nottingham.
Plans may include the development of St Mary's in the Lace Market, which many say should have been a cathedral.
The working party, led by judge John Hopkin, will also examine whether Southwell is the most appropriate location for the bishop's home and office.
The Bishop of Southwell, the Right Reverend George Cassidy said Southwell was not a well known town outside Nottinghamshire and the name of the diocese often lead to confusion.
"A lot of people don't know where Southwell is or what it stands for.
"The Diocese of Southwell often gets confused with Southwark in London."
