Work is starting on a project to protect more than 1,000 homes along the River Trent from flooding. The existing defences at Colwick, in Nottinghamshire, held out during the floods in autumn 2000 but water came within inches of overtopping the bank.
To prevent future flooding, the Environment Agency is raising the height of the barriers.
During the work, some footpaths will be closed, and a number of trees and shrubs will have to be taken up.
Five new trees will be planted for each one removed.
