A scheme which has cut the number of burglaries in parts of Mansfield by as much as 80% could be extended to other areas of the district. The project, called Safe and Secure Homes, involves residents on the Bull Farm estate having free intruder alarms and other security devices.
Launched six months ago the initiative has exceeded all targets set for it.
Police and councillors are now considering rolling out the scheme to more neighbourhoods in the area.
"Difficult task"
Inspector Tim Menzies from Nottinghamshire Police said: "We have had a 40% reduction overall in the five neighbourhood renewal areas in Mansfield.
"In one area we have had a 79% reduction, which is absolutely outstanding.
"We set ourselves a target of a 25% reduction in a 12 month period and we have achieved and exceeded that in under six months.
"The difficult task is now to maintain that sort of result."
Dorothy Vernon, who lives on the Bull Farm estate, felt she would recommend it to other people.
She said: "It is a deterrent when people see the alarms, they think twice about breaking in.
"It gives you peace of mind if you are going out of the house or are just sitting in bed."
