Row over pub's paint job
Bell Inn
The pub used to be painted cream and black
A vivid yellow paint job on one of Nottingham's oldest pubs could land its owners in trouble.

The new facade at the Bell Inn, on Old Market Square, has caused a row over conservation issues.

Built in the mid 15th Century and used as a pub since the 1700s, the Bell used to have a traditional black and white frontage.

But the city council is considering forcing the new owners to take down a new illuminated sign and possibly even repainting the walls.

Despite records showing the building has been at least six different colours in its time, the council is worried such a bright look does not fit in with the area.

NICELY AGED

Alan Clarke, councillor with responsibility for planning, said; "The important thing that it is one of the oldest pubs in the city.

"They have enhanced the services provided, serving more food and real ales and I think they should be focussing on the service rather than the surface."

The new owners, brewery Hardys and Hansons, declined to comment ahead of Wednesday's planning meeting.
