Heroin abuse is widespread in the Worksop area |
An MP heading an inquiry into heroin abuse says more medical help is needed to get drug addicts back on their feet. Bassetlaw MP John Mann, who is reopening a public inquiry into drug abuse in North Nottinghamshire on Tuesday, is calling for more treatment for heroin users.
Mr Mann says some addicts are kicking their habit, but much work remains to really make sure the problem is under control.
"It is getting people off the drug and out of crime and back into work that is important - it has been successful here but we want medical help offered routinely and immediately to all heroin addicts," Mr Mann said.
Jobs needed
The Labour MP said one surgery in Worksop, Nottinghamshire is treating 60 heroin addicts.
Former coal mining areas in North Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire have been affected by unemployment and drug addiction, prompting Mr Mann to organise the public inquiry in 2002.
Mr Mann is also calling for better drugs education in secondary schools along with more job opportunities for former addicts.
The three-day inquiry in October 2002 found that one in three households in Worksop is affected by heroin - either through addiction or a drug-related burglary.
The inquiry is being reopened to hear new evidence from health professionals on progress made so far.
