School re-build focuses on sport
Fire crews at Wheldon School

A Nottingham school is stepping up its campaign to become a centre of excellence in sport.

Plans are being drawn up for the new site which will form part of the rebuilt Wheldon School in Carlton.

The school was destroyed by fire in December 2002.

Parents, teachers and members of the community have been invited to give their opinions on the plans which include starting the process to award it special school status as a sports college.

Teacher Derek Poole said it has been a positive step forward: "It's hard work obviously because of the situation we are in with temporary buildings and working on two sites.

"But it has helped the morale of the school as it has given us something to aim for."

Building work on the new school is getting underway and should be complete in time for the new term in September.
