'Life' ban for sex offender

A child abuser has been banned from going near any school, children's playground or swimming pool for the rest of his life after being convicted of a sex attack on a 13-year-old boy.

Mark Pike, 39, of Bestwood, Nottingham was jailed for three and a half years by Judge John Machin at Lincoln Crown Court.

Judge Machin also made a restraining order prohibiting Pike from going within 400 yards of any school, play area or pool.

Pike was convicted last month by a jury at Nottingham Crown Court of indecently assaulting a boy in October 2001 after befriending the youngster.

'Disturbing conduct'

Pike, who had denied the charge, was ordered to register for life as a sex offender.

The court was told on Thursday that Pike was convicted in the early 1980s of indecency with a young girl and four years ago was jailed for six months for inciting a child to commit and act of gross indecency.

The judge told Pike: "It all points to a disturbing pattern of conduct.

"I have no doubt at all that the offence you committed against this boy warrants a sentence of custody."

At the trial, the jury was told that Pike took the boy back to his home and assaulted him during his overnight stay.

Pike denied any indecent conduct towards the youngster.

Simon Molyneux, defending, said a psychiatrist had assessed Pike as being of "medium" risk of carrying out further sex offences.
