Conservationists are urging people to contact them if they spot a declining bird species near their homes.

Barn owls have been rapidly declining in Nottinghamshire with just a quarter of the number of mating pairs compared to 70 years ago.

Rushcliffe Barn Owls project is now leading a campaign to find out the bird numbers in the county by asking homeowners to contact them if there are birds nesting nearby.

They have also begun an adopt-a-box scheme to try and get more people to create nesting areas for barn owls.

Clive James, from the project, said the numbers were about 200 pairs seventy years ago.

He said that number had fallen to app

roximately 50 mating pairs.
