Hard drugs are seen as a rising problem in parts of the county |
Nottinghamshire is expected to get its own drugs czar as part of a 500,000 scheme to tackle the problems of heroin and crack cocaine. The county's Police Authority is funding a dedicated team to help catch dealers and offer treatment to addicts.
A senior officer from Nottinghamshire Police is likely to be named as the county's drugs czar.
His job will be to launch a two-pronged approach to one of the major problems facing the force.
There will be a tactical group of operational staff which will see police targeting specific areas with the biggest drugs problems.
Additionally, a team of professionals from the police, local authorities and health outlets will provide treatment and support programmes.
It is hoped the scheme will also reduce other crimes associated with drugs such as burglary, theft and assault.
The 500,000 bill is being paid for through the council tax.
