The budget for performing arts and music in Northamptonshire will be cut by £50,000 in the next financial year. County councillors said they wanted the arts and music service to become more self-sufficient and had originally proposed cuts of four times the amount. They voted in favour of £21m cuts as part of the main budget discussion which saw a council tax rise of 3.5% on Thursday night. The council has said it must save £100m and may shed "hundreds" of jobs. The full council also allocated an extra £2m to road improvements, £1m into heath and social services and £2.5m into care for the elderly and children in care.
