Special steps down after 39 years

Bob Whitear
Mr Whitear was the force's longest service special constable

A special constable has stepped down after 39 years of service with Northamptonshire Police.

Bob Whitear joined the Bedfordshire and Luton Special Constabulary in 1968 at the age of 20 before transferring to the Northamptonshire Specials in 1972.

During his time in Northamptonshire he was posted to work on the rural areas where he helped out on rural patrols, carnivals and football matches.

Mr Whitear, 60, is the force's longest service special constable.

He said: "My work has been such a major part of my life. I will miss the service, and I am not sure how I will fill up my spare time, but at 60 years of age I really think it is about time I took a rest."
