Hotel accidents under spotlight

Borough officials are concerned over tourism industry casualties
More workers in the hotel industry in Northampton have suffered injuries from slipping, tripping or falling than any other cause over the last five years.

These were all accidents that could have been avoided, a borough council spokesman said.

A conference targeting the avoidable accidents in the hotel industry starts in Northampton next week.

"It has already attracted over 100 delegates," the council said. People from across the industry are involved.

Representatives from the hotel industry in Northamptonshire, Health and Safety Executive, county trading standards, fire and rescue, Northampton Enterprise and all the local authorities will discuss issues and awareness.

Julian Wilks, Northampton's senior environmental officer, said: "The aim is to assist in reducing accidents by giving advice on how to comply with current legal priorities.

"The knock on effect of all this should result in a reduction in the number of inspections or visits required to hotels and bed and breakfast establishments, as they will be complying with all the legislation.

"This is a wonderful example of organisations working in partnership to achieve a common goal - to help reduce accidents in this sector."
