Tony Blair during his visit to the Northampton Academy |
Prime Minister Tony Blair has been visiting an academy school set up as part of his government's policy of education reform. During one of his first public engagements since announcing he would stand down in June he toured the Northampton Academy.
He described it as "one of the most amazing schools in the country".
He said his vision for academies was to give pupils in "underperforming areas" better opportunities.
"We are spending 10 times more on education than when we first came to power and that money is going into capital investment in new buildings, sports facilities and kitchens.
"In a few years time when all schools will be academies, we'll see a transformed education system."
