Increased policing for Grand Prix
Cars line up on the grid for the start of the 2006 British Grand Prix
Security will be stepped up at the British Grand Prix this weekend
The British Grand Prix will have an increased police presence in the wake of the recent terror attacks in London and Glasgow.

There is no intelligence to suggest any threat to the F1 race at Silverstone this weekend, or Northants as a whole.

But Northamptonshire Police will enforce a higher level of security as a precautionary measure.

Officers will carry out increased patrols of the circuit and searches throughout the weekend.

Supt Simon Blatchly confirmed there would be an increased uniform presence at the circuit and around the gates and car parks.

'Paramount importance'

"We are working closely with Silverstone circuit management and will be doing all we can to keep race goers safe but minimise any disruption," Supt Blatchly said.

"Security is our utmost priority and while there is no intelligence to suggest a threat to the Grand Prix, we have seen that attacks can happen without warning."

Richard Phillips, managing director of Silverstone Circuits Ltd, said: "The security and enjoyment of both spectators and participants at the British Grand Prix is of paramount importance.

"In addition to the police presence, Silverstone employs 2000 stewards and has installed additional CCTV to ensure the smooth operation of the event and the safety of all attending."

Britain's Lewis Hamilton heads into his debut home Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend with a 14-point lead in the F1 championship.
