Vets warn about deadly dog virus
Dog owners in Northamptonshire are being urged to be alert for signs of a potentially fatal virus.

Vets at Northampton's The People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) say Parvovirus causes bleeding diarrhoea, vomiting and affects the intestines.

Three suspected cases of the virus have been treated at the hospital in Monks Pond Street in the last few weeks.

Vets say if a dog shows symptoms it should be taken to its local veterinary practice immediately.

Canine Parvovirus is a highly contagious disease which can be spread through contact with the faeces of infected dogs and every day objects such as clothing.

There are no drugs available to combat the viral infection, so seriously ill patients may need intensive treatments such as intra-venous fluids.

A vaccination against the virus is available.
